About us

Eus van Someren (1960) is an expert in the field of sleep. He works as the head of the Sleep and Cognition Department at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, and is a professor of neurophysiology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. He has contributed to more than 200 articles in scientific journals.

Poor sleep and fatigue during the day are common. Poor sleep can be caused by circumstances such as stress, caring for small children, noise. However, in many cases something is wrong with sleep itself. For example, people may have Sleep Apnea, a problem with breathing during sleep. Or Narcolepsy, a rare disease that makes it hard to resist asleep during the day. There are various sleep disorders with different causes. The most common but least understood sleep disorder is 'Insomnia', also known as 'Sleeplessness'. Approximately 10% of people suffer from it. Unfortunately, we are often left empty-handed when it comes to treatment.

We want to change that

The Netherlands Sleep Registry is an initiative of researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) and VU University Amsterdam. We believe it is high time to join forces to help poor sleepers.

Better treatment

The first step towards a better treatment of poor sleep is to learn more from people with poor sleep and from people with good sleep. We can only do that with the help of many, many people. If they want to share information about their sleep, stress sensitivity, personality, health and so on, we can first start to understand what kinds of poor sleep and good sleep actually exist. One person may sleep poorly because of cold feet, another because of incessant worrying. Of note, people who always sleep well, actually have the secret to good sleep without even realizing it! If we know more about all individual differences between poor sleepers and good sleepers, we can look for better solutions for poor sleep.

Participation is simple, yet most valuable to find solutions for poor sleep. Participating is as easy as filling in a questionnaire or taking a test occasionally, for example once a week. This can all be done at home or from any place, from behind the computer, whenever it's convenient. You will get feedback on the results yourself. All data will remain anonymous and will be stored and processed securely, without personal data. Under no circumstances will we pass on your email address to others.

Your help is very important. This is how you help us to get rid of sleep problems!

I would like to help with the research.
